Randomosity, originally known as Surskitty and Torchikorita’s Land, renamed to surskitty’s Land, and briefly known as That Site Over There was probably created on or around 19 November, 2003.
Originally hosted on FreeWebs, Randomosity’s first name change was due to discovering that they only allowed SEVEN PAGES per non-HTML web site. Rather than learning HTML, I — surskitty — quickly created a second site, Torchikorita’s Land, renamed Surskitty and Torchikorita’s Land to surskitty’s Land, and added some more pages on the new Torchikorita’s Land account.
[Un?]fortunately, I realised how incredibly bland my shiny new website was, so I messed around with it a bit and converted it to “Advanced Mode” or HTML mode.
Now completely and utterly confused, I then resorted to a. copypaste random code and try to figure out what it did, and b. learn HTML. Eventually, I learned enough to not bother with the WYSIWYG mode of WebzEdit.
Shortly after this, I started using Server Side Include. By the by, it is incredibly helpful to use some sort of include if you are going to need to put the content on more than one page. No, really. If you intend on making a website, automating as much as possible is highly recommended. There’s no reason not to and it will help you.
Eventually, I found a major flaw in my plan: Freewebs allowed a scant fifty files per account. Even after moving my images to a Photobucket account, I still had very little space left. Fifty files is great if you plan on having little to no content.
After much fruitless searching, I discovered 1ASPHost. Secure in the knowledge that Butterfree used ASP for The Cave of Dragonflies so it couldn’t be too hard, I created an account there and began the labourious task of transferring every single file to it. It probably would have been easier if I was using the right file extension, but no~ I had to be using .htm.
After a few painful hours of converting all of the content to .shtml, I realized ‘Oh crap, this doesn't WORK’. Kind of late for that, ne?
Eventually, Korwatis Ricky suggested using HostingAnime, as it supported PHP and seemed mostly okay. This was probably sometime in late July, 2004. And so, surskitty’s Land grew and grew for a while, until.....
...someone had the bright idea of adding a couple banner ads to everything in the most inconvenient spots imaginable. That’s right, banner ads.
Filled with righteous fury, I looked around for a good paid hosting site, eventually settling on SiteFlip on Crystylla’s advice. SiteFlip is fairly awesome and almost certainly worth the dollar a month. It’s a cup of coffee every three months. It probably won’t slaughter your wallet.
I have no idea why I originally created Randomosity. I think I was probably inspired by The Cave of Dragonflies, Ricky’s Haunted Cave, and Mew’s Hangout and just wanted to be in the Awesome Squad.
