Early-game Walkthrough
Before I start, I would like to inform you that this walkthrough is not intended for people playing the game for the first time. My intention with this is so that you do not end up with any glaring issues with obtaining all weapons (and therefore, abilities). As such, I probably will talk more about what to do rather than how to play.
At the very beginning of the game, I highly recommend changing Marche's job to Thief and buying some equipment for his new class. Afterwards, complete Herb Picking, send your Soldier on Dueling Sub, finish that, kick your Soldier out of your clan, and beat Thesis Hunt.
I heavily recommend having someone (read: Marche) use Steal: Gil on someone for a bit during this mission, assuming you aren't trying for perfect stats. You will need money for this, and you aren't going to be doing very much battling.
After you've taken care of that and are now able to participate in the Clan Wars, go off and complete [race] Wanted! missions until you've either almost run out of gil or have reached a Negotiate stat of 25. Do not recruit anyone who asks, as you need to have five or fewer characters in your clan in order for [race] Wanted missions to appear.
Besides doing [race] Wanted! missions, I recommend also completing random dispatches as it is highly unlikely to do much harm. Just be careful not to complete Caravan Guard if it happens to be available at this point in the game. I don't think it is, but just in case.
Do not, however, complete any engagement missions other than possibly Fire! Fire or Giza Plains, as if you need experience, you're much better off getting into a clan fight (and you don't risk doing something you don't want to). Just keep completing [race] Wanted! missions until you've obtained the Cinquedea at Negotiation: 25. After you've gotten the Cinquedea, I suggest continuing to do [race] Wanted! until you get a Human recruit, as you kind of need one eventually and you might as well get one when you're sure to find a Human.
Attach the Cinquedea to Marche or Montblanc and enter the mission Wanted!: Diaghelv Godeye. You'll need to check the description to see if it's the one you want, and it only appears in a certain month. Personally, I would make sure my Viera is currently a Red Mage with Sleep so that I can incapacitate all of the opposition safely, but it isn't necessary.
Make sure you refrain from killing the Thief or Diaghelv. If you kill the Thief, you need to exit the mission; if you kill Diaghelv, reset since you'll have completed the mission and that is exactly what you do not wish to do. I would, however, recommend killing all other NPCs on the field and incapacitating Diaghelv if any of your characters have any counter abilities.
Proceed to use Steal: Ability on the Thief until one of your Humans or Moogles has obtained Steal: Weapon. It would also probably be helpful to get anything else useful it knows on everyone if you can, and optionally snag an ability from every other character there. Hey, it's not like you have much better to do. After stealing everything you want, flee from the mission, pay for the mission again, and repeat until you've gotten Steal: Weapon on everyone you want. You might want to not finish the mission until you have obtained your own Swordbreaker, but that would be up to you.
Still, I would not clear that mission until I've obtained Lini and Cheney or a Swordbreaker. Once again, though, it might be easier to just wait for your own Swordbreaker.
The next thing you want for your conquest of thievery is one of the following abilities: Sensor (learned by Soldiers from a Burglar Sword) or Mog Peek (learned by Mog Knights from a Paraiba Blade). Coincidentally - or not? - both races capable of stealing weaponry are able to check for rarer weapons.
As you progress through the rest of the game, make sure you check the opposing side for either characters with the A-Ability: Item in place of a real subjob or a main job of Alchemist. If they have either one, set up your party to include someone with a Thief and someone with a Mog Knight or Soldier [sub]job. Personally, I prefer making Marche have a subjob of Thief and Montblanc have a subjob of Mog Knight, but you could have one character be both the Thief and Soldier/Mog Knight and simply Haste/Quicken/Smile them. Be prepared to wait a while for the NPC to finally draw their rare weaponry, but it's worth it.
- Someone has an Angel Ring in Free Cyril!, and there's another one in Borzoi Clean-up!
- A Mog Knight carries a Materia Blade in reserve in Present Day
- Make sure to grab the Alchemist's Zeus Mace in Golden Clock, seeing as that would be the only one in the game, ignoring Treasure Hunts.
- At least two Viera have Ribbons in Over the Hill.
- Someone has a Madu in one of the Borzoi missions and Over the Hill.
- Honestly, half of the armour in Over the Hill is worth nabbing, too. Just steal everything there, really, including the abilities.
- Someone carries a Heretic Rod in one of the Corrupt Judge missions.
Secret Characters
All secret characters require you to have beaten the main part of the game - that means Li-Grim and so on and so forth - before their missions become available. Their missions do not count as part of the 300 missions required to recruit Cid, and if any of them are currently in your clan, you will not be able to replay the endgame.
Babus the Runeseeker can be recruited after you complete Left Behind and With Babus. Rumour has it that if you complete A Maiden’s Cry between the two missions, Shara is no longer obtainable, so you might want to not do that, but hey, your loss. Babus can be recruited if you ever declined his attempt to join or simply kicked him out in the dispatch mission Doned Here! during the month of Madmoon.
Ezel requires you to have completed The Resistance and Reconcillation before he will join your clan. In the event that he leaves your clan somehow, he can be recruited in the dispatch mission Bored! during the month of Sagemoon.
Ritz will join you if you complete S.O.S. and Mortal Snow. While she functions primarily as a Viera - being able to take any Viera job, as well as use the Viera-only headgear - her Totema is that of the Humans: Mateus. She can be recruited again in the month of Bardmoon.
Shara is recruitable after you complete A Maiden's Cry. Do be sure not to do this between Left Behind and With Babus as - supposedly - this can prevent you from getting Shara. Ever. She could be obtained again in a repeat of A Maiden's Cry, during the month of Huntmoon.
Judgemaster Cid will join you after you complete all 300 missions. Having Cid in your party unlocks the Corrupted Judge extra missions, and - if you kick him out - he will try to rejoin during the month of Kingmoon. For whatever reason, Cid is incapable of stepping in water.
Semi-secret Characters
Obtaining Eldina: Eldina the Viera Red Mage comes with Doublecast and Sleep, and you obtain her by completing a mission with Elda's Cup as a mission item. As a result, not many people have her as Caravan Guard requires and uses this item.Obtaining Quinn: Quinn the Nu Mou Sage comes with Ultima Masher and Giga Flare, and you obtain him randomly while completing Missing Professor. Do note that the vast majority of the time, you will fail to get him. Keep trying or skip it.
Obtaining Cheney: Cheney the Human Hunter comes with Ultima Shot and Capture, and he is randomly obtained while completing a mission with the Snake Shield. As this mission item is never used, you can continue trying for him indefinitely.
Obtaining Lini: Lini the Moogle Mog Knight comes with Ultima Charge and Mog Shield, I think, and he is obtained by completing a mission with The Hero Gaol. Also, if you press select on this particular mission item, you unlock five missions which deal with the events in The Hero Gaol, and you can obtain two somewhat powerful blades.
Obtaining Pallanza: Pallanza the Bangaa Gladiator comes with Ultima Sword and Lightning Blade, and he is obtained by completing a mission with Wyrmstone, another mission item which is never actually used.
Obtaining Littlevili: Littlevili the Viera Sniper is obtained randomly while completing the recurring mission Clan Finals.
