When you start the game, you have a choice of Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle. Your rival always chooses the one your starter is weak against.

Starter Information

Bulbasaur is a grass-poison type, starts with Tackle and Growl, and learns its first damaeing grass attack at level 13. At level 7, it learns Leech Seed, which drains hit points steadily throughout the battle. Charmander is a fire type, knows Scratch and Growl, and will learn its first fire attack, Ember at level 7. Squirtle is a water type, starts with Tackle and Tail Whip, and learns its first water attack, Bubble, at level 8.

If you start with Bulbasaur, your rival picks Charmander. Charmander is easily beated by water types and rock types. Ground also works, but beware of Charizard, Charmander's final stage. Charizard gains the flying type, making it impervious to ground attacks. Charizard is best attacked with rock moves, because flying and fire are weak against it, causing four times the usual damage. Geodude and its evolutions are very good against it in all forms.

If you start with Charmander, your rival picks Squirtle. Squirtle is weak against grass and electric. A Pikachu that you can catch in the Viridian Forest would be best. Not only is Pikachu fast, when it evolves into Raichu, its stats become formidable. Plus, if you have the time to make a team of level 100 Pokémon that includes a Pikachu, if you win Master Ball level Prime Cup in Pokémon Stadium using Pikachu in every match, Pikachu learns Surf, the best water type attack. Grass types like Oddish and Bellsprout are not very popular because of Mewtwo, one of the most commonly used Pokemon. Psychic is strong against poison, and grass types are in Red/Blue/Yellow are part poison, except for Tangela and Parasect, which are each used as Mewtwo counters.

If you start with Squirtle, your rival picks Bulbasaur. As I said, poison is weak against psychic types like Alakazam and Mewtwo. Alakazam and Mewtwo are very strong, and a fire type like Arcanine can't knock out a grass type as quickly as a psychic type.

Team Advice

Good teams for Red and Blue cover all types. A good team generally has an electric, fire, water, psychic, a filler to counter weaknesses, and something to counter psychic types such as the ever-popular Mewtwo, usually a Parasect or Tangela with Leech Life/Mega Drain and Growth. For example, I use Raichu or Jolteon as my electic type.
